Special Topic on “Medicine and Food Homology” in TCM

Dear esteemed colleague:

Greetings! Thank you for your attention and support for the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences (JTCMS).

Medicines are substances used for disease prevention, treatment, or physiological regulation, while foods are consumable substances providing energy and nutrition, but not disease treatment. “Medicine and food homology” in China means that some foods also serve as medicines with no clear boundary between them. This concept originates from the principles and practical experiences of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Prof. Bin Cong, an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering Member, has given a definition of “food and medicine homology” in TCM i.e. “a substance which integrates pharmacological and nutritional functions into one entity, among which the medicinal components should have no detrimental effects on the body and also can be consumed for a long time”.

This special issue will focus on the fundamental research and clinical applications of the “medicine and food homology” concept in TCM, including but not limited to the following topics:

1. Mechanisms of action and compatibility of active ingredients in TCM medicinal herbs and foods;

2. Potential and application strategies of dual-use medicinal foods in the prevention and treatment of common and chronic diseases;

3. Analysis of active ingredients and quality control in dual-use medicinal foods;

4. Evidence-based medicine research on dual-use medicinal drugs and formulas;

5. Reviews on modern advancements in TCM dietary therapy;

6. Research on the application and development of traditional dual-use medicinal foods.

We cordially invite you to contribute original research articles, expert reviews, and clinical research reports for this special topic.
